Sustainable Shipping of Plants<\/h1><\/div>

The association Acker is working to make the shipping of young plants for school, daycare, and kindergarten growing plots more sustainable.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Based in Berlin, Acker is a non-profit educational organisation and a social enterprise that has scaled with exceptional success in recent years.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the heart of its work are programmes such as Gem\u00fcseAckerdemie and AckerRacker, in which children and young people discover on their own vegetable plots how food is grown and why nature, resources, and sustainable action matter. In 2024 alone, the programmes reached more than 230,000 pupils at more than 1,200 schools, as well as around 17,200 children at 473 daycare centres and kindergartens.<\/p>\n

The funding supports the development, testing, and long-term establishment of a reusable system for shipping young plants to schools and daycare centres, embedded in an educational framework. The starting point is a pilot from the 2026 planting season: according to Acker, the organisation ships around 354,000 young plants every year, roughly 30 percent of which are currently sent in plastic packaging. In the first reusable packaging pilot with a partner nursery, however, only 46 containers were returned, even though two shipments of young plants had been sent to each of 412 schools and daycare centres.<\/p>\n

Acker therefore aims to optimise its logistics and packaging while also developing educational materials, return instructions, and incentive and participation formats. Return rates, the use of the educational offerings, and qualitative feedback will be evaluated on an ongoing basis. <\/span><\/p>\n
