Emissions Trading in the Plastics Sector – Is That Possible?

May 23, 2023

The use of recyclates must be significantly increased and should be worthwhile! There is agreement on this. However, a comprehensive use of recyclates in all products and packaging is not expected in the near future. A certificate trade for plastics production is therefore currently being discussed as an initiative. With the help of this instrument, a processor that predominantly uses recyclates could sell certificates to companies that are forced to use a relatively large amount of fossil-based virgin material for technical reasons. The value of the certificates would correspond to the actual amount of the recyclate price and thus gives hope to reduce the imbalance of the used recyclate and virgin plastic quantities.

Ansgar Schonlau (Maag GmbH) and Dr. Dirk Textor (bvse-Fachverband) are working on such an idea of certificate trading for plastics production and have even founded a company together with Certified Recycled Content CRC GmbH. They presented their concept in the first edition of the new POLY:Solution Lunch series. Whether it could be a promising global solution or just remains a pipe dream was then discussed with the participants.
