Achieving a Closed-Loop Plastic Cycle with Just 2 Cents? – A Thought Experiment
May 20, 2021
The good news is that in the next decade, the plastic cycle for packaging in Germany can be closed without resorting to virgin petroleum-based materials – if the economic framework is right. For example, through effective CO2 pricing, subsidies for recyclates and bio-based plastics, and noticeable bonuses for recyclable materials in the Dual System. In the report by the Circular Economy Initiative Deutschland, “Closed-Loop Plastic Packaging,” the authors venture an exciting thought experiment. They approach the question of what framework conditions would allow us to achieve a closed-loop plastic cycle in 2030 and show that the additional costs would be bearable for all of us.
Katharina Schweitzer and Prof. Dr. Thomas Müller-Kirschbaum presented the thought experiment to us in the POLYPROBLEM Online Seminar and then discussed it with the POLYPROBLEM Community.
