Founded in 2018, the Osnabrück-based organization Ozeankind promotes environmental awareness among children on the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar through environmental protection and recycling projects.
Through environmental education initiatives in Germany, Ozeankind encourages children in this part of the East African country to take independent action to protect the environment. Key areas of focus include raising awareness and educating children, practical measures to combat plastic waste, collaboration with local communities and schools, and supporting women and children to strengthen their role in society.
Ozeankind’s vision is a world where everyone has access to a functioning waste management system and where environmental protection becomes second nature as early as kindergarten and elementary school. Environmental protection should be the new “normal.” In Zanzibar, the organization runs six “Swop Shops” where children can drop off collected plastic bottles and exchange them for items they need for school, play, or sports – or simply want to have. In addition to educational work and textbook donations, Ozeankind regularly organizes cleanups in Zanzibar and also in Germany to collect litter from the natural environment.
