Buy Food with Plastic

Pay with plastic at the refill truck

In Nicaragua, people exchange plastic bottles for hot meals—and at the same time learn how waste prevention and hygiene interact.

The original Buy Food with Plastic campaign format has evolved into a comprehensive program in which two refill trucks regularly visit communities. There, they fill hygiene products into reusable containers—paid for with money or collected plastic. The model is supplemented by educational programs and upcycling factories, which are visited by school classes, for example.

The Röchling Foundation supports the refill truck project as a socio-ecological model with international potential: it combines poverty reduction, environmental education and waste prevention—in a very practical and direct way on site.
