PLASTIC TREATY FUTURES –
What should really be in the global plastics agreement
June 6, 2024
Negotiations for a global plastics agreement under the umbrella of the United Nations are entering their fifth round. But what exactly does the international community of states need to decide in concrete terms so that such an agreement really has an impact?
Supported by the Röchling Foundation and the Minderoo Foundation, Systemiq has developed PLASTIC TREATY FUTURES, an interactive tool that allows the impact of different scenarios on future plastic waste volumes to be precisely modeled. The data model is intended to help the negotiating delegations make the right decisions. At the fourth round of negotiations in Ottawa, the predictions met with enormous interest from the participating states.
Yoni Shiran, Partner at Systemiq, presented the results of the data-driven forecasts at the fifth POLY:Solution Lunch. They prove that only a comprehensive global set of rules can significantly reduce plastic waste emissions.
Yoni and his team have spoken with the delegations of many countries in recent months. In the POLY:Solution Lunch, he also provided insights into the status of the negotiations and took time for questions.
